Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or place entered in a search tool is sent to the outside provider that operates that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its results. We do not keep a separate site log of the words submitted in those boxes.
Messages and Contact Submissions
When you email us, the message may be retained so a response can be provided. It is not shared beyond our organization unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
Our servers may receive routine technical and usage details as pages load:
- Device IP address
- Browser type and version
- Operating system and device category
- Pages viewed and time spent on them
- Referring website, when available
- Date and time of each request
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files placed on a device. They and analytics services help show which pages visitors use, how the site performs, and where a visit ends. Browser controls can block cookies, although doing so may change how some features work.
What We Do With This Data
Information gathered through ordinary site use supports these limited operational purposes:
- Operate, secure, and improve site performance
- Route a submitted search to the selected partner service
- Measure which reference pages are useful
- Identify and repair technical faults
- Deliver advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
We do not own, assemble, sell, or maintain a personal criminal-record database. The site publishes general directions to Cherokee County custodians, including the Sheriff, the unified state courts, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and visitor data is not compiled into a consumer report or a third party’s criminal file.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies power the search boxes. Their privacy terms govern information entered in those tools, and each company decides its own retention and sharing practices. We do not control those decisions. Review the provider’s policy before sending a query.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to Cherokee County offices, North Carolina court and agency systems, legal resources, or third-party tools. Once you leave this site, the destination’s privacy rules apply. Consider those terms before providing personal information.
Advertising providers may also use their systems to measure activity across websites and choose targeted ads.
Who Might See Your Data
We do not sell personal information. Data may be disclosed to:
- Search providers that process a query you submit
- Analytics vendors that measure traffic and performance
- Advertising networks serving content on the pages
- A government or law-enforcement body acting under a valid legal order
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable, commonly used security controls protect information in our possession. No online system can be guaranteed fully secure, however, so we cannot promise that unauthorized access or another breach will never occur.
Users Under 18
The site is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal data from a person under 18. If information from a minor is identified, we will remove it after receiving notice.
Your Data Rights
North Carolina law, including the Identity Theft Protection Act, G.S. 75-60 through 75-66, and the Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act, G.S. 75-1.1, may provide rights or remedies in applicable circumstances. The North Carolina Public Records Law, Chapter 132, governs records held by public agencies and does not turn this private site’s data into a government record. Depending on the law that applies, you may be able to:
- Request access to personal data held about you
- Ask that inaccurate information be corrected
- Seek deletion of qualifying data
- Object to or opt out of certain processing
